The Emporium Egine Company recently were able to use their SurgiVet Animal Oxygen Masks, which were donated by H.E.L.P. Animals of Orange City Florida.

Joe Krieg, Sr. says the department resonded to a kitchen fire on East Second Street.

Firefighters helped a woman and her son escape the thick black smoke gathering in the building, and they could hear a cat, but not see it.

Suddenly, Paulee the cat came running out, and the firefighters noticed she had taken in a lot of smoke.

Firefighters then took the cat and gave her 15 liters of oxygen for about 20 minutes.

Krieg says animals usually die before they are able to be given oxygen after a fire, so it's the first time they've been able to administer the treatment.

The family is happy that there pet is still alive.
