Causer Invites Area Seniors to Senior Expo Oct. 10
HARRISBURG - Rep. Martin Causer (R-Turtlepoint) is inviting area seniors and their families to his Sixth Annual Senior Citizens Expo on Friday, Oct. 10, at the Roulette Fire Hall in Roulette.
The free event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and lunch will be provided.
"Every year, more and more people attend my senior expos," Causer said. "Clearly, area seniors find them helpful, informative and fun, so much so that they are spreading the word to their friends and family members.
"I look forward to seeing some new faces as well as some familiar ones this year," he added.
State, county and local vendors will be on hand to distribute information and answer seniors' questions. Information about health care, insurance, nutrition and exercise, fire safety, financial planning, fraud protection, government services, hunting/fishing and personal safety will be available. Health screenings will also be offered, and door prizes will be awarded.
For more information on the senior expo, contact Causer's Coudersport district office at (814) 274-9769.
Last week came the welcome news that the Federal Highway Administration rejected the Pennsylvania Turnpike’s bid to toll Interstate 80. I, like many of you who opposed the tolling of I-80, was pleased with the decision and felt it was the appropriate decision for the citizens of the Commonwealth. It really speaks volumes to the success that can be experienced when state and local leaders work together for what is in the best interest of our communities.
However, while everyone continues to express appreciation for the federal government’s decision, one fact still remains…we have a transportation funding crisis across this country. Once again, and oddly rightfully so this time, the federal government finds problems, but never solutions. Sure, they turned down the transportation plan, but they did nothing to bring about solutions to this crisis. As you may or may not know, the Federal Highway Fund, which helps states fund a significant portion of our road and bridge needs, is almost bankrupt. Unless they come up with a solution quickly, and I doubt they will, it is going to be left up to the states to find means to support a deteriorating infrastructure. In Pennsylvania’s case, that deteriorating infrastructure is the worst in the nation.
Therefore, over the past several months I have been around the district informing community leaders of a transportation plan, which I recently introduced in the Senate. First, the plan calls for the elimination of tolls on Interstate 80; part of the plan that has already proven successful. In addition, this plan calls for the General Assembly and the Governor to make tough budgetary decisions. It calls for, among other actions, transferring funding for the Pennsylvania State Police out of the Motor License Fund over a two-year period. This creates over a half billion dollars toward our roads and bridges. The State Police would be funded by existing revenues in the general fund. Along with public-private partnerships and limited bonding, the Commonwealth would be looking at approximately one billion dollars toward transportation.
As I stated, we have to make tough, prudent decisions in the general fund to make this happen. However, I believe the safety of our residents far outweighs the need for a good headline on a project that should not be a priority in the budget. It is time to reign in spending, make infrastructure a priority and find much of the revenues for our road and bridge problem in the current state budget.
Living in Bradford insulates me a bit from what the Community of Roulette is feeling right now. I can't be there to see the tears, and to hug the necks. And to help people through this.
I went to school with both Matt and Cheri, and have fond memories of both of them.
I have not seen either of them since school, so I really don't know much about what led up to this tragedy other than rumors and various reports.
But what I do know, is that this murder-suicide has hurt more than just the two of them.
The whole community is facing this grief...
This kind of tragedy can do a few things to a community... it can tear a community apart, or it can draw it closer together.
It's hard when someone is killed. We want justice. We want to see someone pay the penalty.
Unfortunately, Matt's choices kept us from seeing that. What he chose to do was horrendous, and inexcusable.
But that leaves us in a quandry, if we end it there.
Matt's choice was not his family's choice. Let's remember that they are as shocked and horrified and grieving as Cheri's family.
Two families are missing their children... and one child is missing his parents.
Our appropriate response as a community is going to determine what happens here.
What Roulette needs to do is this:
1. We need to come along both families, and let them know that they are in our hearts and prayers... that we care about them... that we want them to find healing, and we are here for them.
2. We need to educate ourselves on issues of mental illness and domestic violence, so that we can watch for warning signs. If we see those signs, we need to step in, so that this kind of tragedy never happens again. There is hope, no matter how much we hurt. The answer is never violence. When we suspect that our neighbor, our friend, our family is getting violent, or needs help, we need to do what we can to get them that help.

I had to travel to Batavia, NY to visit Northgate Church ( http://www.northgatefmc.com )
On the way home, my friend took me out to eat at Alex's Place ( http://www.alexsribs.com ) near the Batavia Downs Race Track.
I had the Half Rack Lunch Special - Garlic Ribs with BBQ on the side, coleslaw, fries, and a bowl of Cheesy Pepperoni Soup.
These were by far, the best ribs I've ever tasted in my life, and perhaps the best restaurant I've ever been to in my life.
The establishment looks like an old speak-easy, and it was a little darker inside than I prefer, but again, the food was ABSOLUTELY amazing, and if any of you are in the neighborhood, I highly recommend getting ya' some ribs!
News: 08/28/07 - Former Police Chief Found Innocent Former Austin Police Chief Shawn Foringer has been found innocent of stealing two pounds of marijuana. A jury deliberated for four hours after the three-day retrial. The chief had been accused of stealing 4 thousand dollars worth of marijuana in October of 2005 that was being held as evidence in the police station. He had reported that it was stolen during a burglary, but a state police investigation found no evidence of a break-in. Foringer is now working in the private sector. From WESB.com
After reading the recent posts about the two dead bodies found in Potter County recently, I thought the names sounded familiar.
I found this story on WFRM from earlier this month.

State police locally have accused an Eldred resident of using his SUV in an attempted assault early Saturday morning in Shinglehouse. Troopers claim 39 year old David Mesler tried to hit Kelly Jo Sherwood, with whom he resides, with his Chevrolet Blazer just east of Lincoln Street at around 3:30 a.m. Sherwood was able tojump out of the way and the Blazer hit a speed limit sign. Despite the fact that damage to the blazer was moderate, Mesler drove off from the scene and was apprehended later. After being arraigned before District Judge Barbara Easton on charges of Aggravated Assault, Simple assault, reckless endangerment , harassment, disorderly conduct and several traffic violations, Mesler was released on $15,000 signature bail provided he have no further contact with Sherwood.
COUDERSPORT - Needs of the communities and residents of Potter County were assessed in considerable detail last year. The information gathered in that process has been analyzed at length, and a number of conclusions have been drawn.
WFRM.net reports: Troopers are probing an internet scam victimizing an 18 year old Coudersport resident over the past few weeks. Authorities say Dustin Anderson had personal property listed on a Pennswoods.net Website and was issued a fraudulent check to purchase an ATV. The “buyer” then sent more money for shipping and Anderson was asked to wire the money to the third party shipper. By the time the buyer’s check was returned as fraudlent, the cash transfer had already taken place. Anderson’s loss is estimated to be $4,000
WFRM.net reports: Coudersport-based state police say DUI charges are pending against 50 year old Merle Webster of Coudersport following a one-vehicle crash Monday night on the Dingman run Road in Hebron Township. Webster was headed north when his ’93 Saturn failed to negotiate a left hand curve, skidded off the road, went down an embankment, hit a fence post and rolled over several times before coming to rest on its wheels in a field. Webster was taken by Coudersport Volunteer Ambulance to Charles Cole Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Webster is also facing numerous traffic violations.
